history for Sat 15th May 2010

Sent Tuesday May 4th
Dear Mail Group member,
I hope that is the last but one mail
bulletin.
Thanks for the images of then and
now, but
please keep them coming. It
will help to identify people and add
a little interest.
http://www.bretton-hall.com/attendees2010.htm
I misunderstood the menu a little,
and had to make a few decisions on
choice. I have had some help, as
this is really not my subject. On
the other hand, I would like you to
look at the choice and be satisfied
that you can accept it. If anyone
has special dietary requirements,
the Sculpture Park has requested
information to help assist this
need.
On the entertainment front, two
people have had to withdraw because
of health and work requirements. We
still have three others, so we can
put a performance together without
too much problem. I would like all
of the entertainment to be informal
and ad hoc if possible. I am also
putting together a set of folk based
songs from my own period (68-71)
that those who are interested can
have a ‘sing along’ Don’t think
twice, Jet Plane, Blowing in the
Wind, Donna etc. Anyone with
requests please let me know. It’s a
long time since I played a Guitar,
so please keep it simple? Others,
who would prefer to keep talking to
friends, can keep on doing so
without any problem as far as I’m
concerned. I would like to maintain
the informality of the occasion, and
try to keep things flexible.
Anyway, the menu is below
Sherry and Soft drinks on arrival.
7.30 Hot fork Buffet
Chicken & chorizo pot roast
Free range chicken breast fillets
roast with chorizo sausage, red
onions, peppers, cherry tomatoes &
fresh oregano
Baked salmon
Salmon fillet baked & served with
lemon & tarragon butter
Spinach & wild mushroom cannelloni
(v)
Fresh pasta sheets filled with
creamed spinach, garlic & wild
mushrooms, finished with parmesan &
cheddar cheeses
Jacket wedges
Crispy fried jacket wedges with sea
salt
Minted green vegetables
Seasonal green vegetables with
minted butter
Plum tomato & torn basil
Crisp green leaf & herb
Fresh fruit salad
Fruit salad using only the best
seasonal fruits available
Yorkshire cheese board
A selection of the finest locally
produced cheeses with chutney’s &
speciality biscuits

2010 timetable
Dear Bretton mail group member.
Almost there! So here are the plans and
timetable. At the bottom of the
timetable are some requests? Ignore at
your peril!
-
Friday 14th May.
Evening at the Old Bull at Midgely---informal
chat and plans for
performance---time 8 ish after a bar
meal.
-
Saturday 15th May 2.30
set off from Bull to Sculpture
Park---this is for people like
Martin Snow, that might like a lift.
(The Sculpture Park car park is pay
and display)
2.45 I will
meet with Kelly from the Sculpture
Park, who will be our guide for the
afternoon.
3.00 Those
doing the visit to Kennel Block and
the Archive, meet in the Sculpture
Park Restaurant for a quick Tea or
Coffee.
3.20 Guided Tour and discussion with
Kelly around the areas to be
controlled by the Sculpture Park.
4.30 Walk around the grounds, or go
back to get changed, powder nose
etc.
7.00 Start arriving at the
restaurant. Drinks---so don’t be
late. First drink paid for from
funds and from Ric Jerome---Cheers
Ric Car parking free after 6pm.
7.30 Start of meal. Seven large
circular tables seating 10 each. It
would be good to mix and match a
bit, although probably people will
wish to be with their partners (for
a while at least)
The menu is still as listed on the
website. A Buffet with plenty of
selection. There will be a licensed
drinks bar. If anyone wishes to give
an after dinner speech, it might be
fun? If you do wish to, then please get
back to me.
The rest of the evening is ad lib with
Rich Keys and others looking at a ‘bit
of a busk’ and optional sing along. Any
other performers welcome---no, very
welcome!
Please bring along any instrument that
you have a about the place---a whistle
or Bodhran or even a Jerry Aaron pile of
peas in a box. The content and standard
will be directly proportional to the
consumption of red wine (speaking
personally) If you wish to escape the
noise, then there is plenty of room out
on the balcony. We have the use of the
restaurant until 1am, but will probably
order taxis for about 12 to 12.30.
At the 2007 reunion in the Hall, it was
noticeable that most people just wanted
to talk and meet up with people. We
will not be offended if that is how it
goes again, however, it is our choice,
and we are pretty good at improvisation,
so let’s just see what happens. I will
be bringing along fairly good touch
sensitive keyboard, and Clarinet, if I
can find it. We could do with a couple
of Guitars, with capos? I’ll have a go
at getting some song sheets of the 67 to
93 era together, as that seems to be the
period that most folk are from. I think
that probably folk based material will
be the easiest to busk. Jet Plane,
Blowing in the Wind etc.
Requests—nay demands! Can everyone make
a badge with their name and years they
were students on it? As wild and
imaginative as you can please?
Please can you send me an image of
yourself (by email) at the age when you
were at Bretton. This is so that we can
put names to faces, and have a good
laugh to see how we have all turned
out. These will be placed by your name
on the website.
Please bring the balance of you payments
in cash if you can? It would be good to
settle up with the Restaurant on the
evening. Everyone has paid £10. £25
more to pay please at the door. Moira
and Dianne will be doing the finance.
The costings have turned out exactly as
planned, list of names on website
http://www.bretton-hall.com/attendees2010.htm
Anyone with images or cd’s to sell,
please feel free to do so. It’s good to
help projects along.
Anymore good ideas please get back to me
a.s.a.p.
Getting close now, so if you want any
more info, then please give me a call.
Regards,
Alan

Bretton Reunion update
Dear Mail Group Member,
Just a very quick update about the reunion, with a
more detailed programme at the end of next week.
The afternoon visit to Kennel Block and the Archive
Library will start at 3pm, not 2pm as previously
thought. This is to accommodate those travelling
from further afield and to fit in with the Sculpture
Park timings. At this stage it looks unlikely that
we will be able to gain access to the Hall, although
I am making one last attempt in that department. We
will meet for the visit at the Sculpture Park
Restaurant and I will be at the main doorway to
guide people to where to go. I enclose a recent
photo of myself for identification and dart board
practice. We will be having a cuppa and a chat
before setting off, and hopefully, if the weather is
OK, a quick walk around the grounds before getting
ready for the meal. The time of the meal will be
confirmed in the next update, although I am aiming
for a 7 for 7.30 start. We have the building until
12pm, although I have a sneaking suspicion that we
will be totally wiped out well before that. The
cost is still on target for £35 per head, and
everybody has already paid £10 deposit. The
balance will be taken on the night by Moira and
Dianne, but please try and come with the correct
amount to save administration.
I will be at Midgely Lodge on Friday and Saturday
evenings, and will be in for a pint and a bar meal,
so if you are around, then please make yourself
known. Several of the attendees are bringing along
their ‘wares’, for example photography and C.D’s
etc. If you have something to sell, then I see no
reason why it won’t add to the interest.
I promise a final timetable within two weeks. Not
long now! I hope that you are all looking forward
to it as much as I am?
Regards,
Alan

Bretton Reunion 2010
Dear Mail Group Member,
Hope you all have had a good Christmas and New
Year.
I
have now started planning in a little more detail
the content of the evening, and also, what to do
during the afternoon prior to the meal. I have now
had a conversation with Kelly Amoss, Development
Officer at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park as she was
looking for a way of building relationships with
past students and staff of the College, and keeping
them informed of developments. At this point, I
must make it clear that the hotel development for
the Mansion and the further development of the
Estate are completely separate issues. Yorkshire
Sculpture Park will take responsibility for the
Kennel Block, National Arts Education Archive and
the Nature Reserve, working closely with Rushbond
P.L.C. who will be developing the Mansion and Stable
Block.
Developments are currently at the planning stage
therefore no further information is available at the
moment.
However, Kelly has suggested that alumni might be
interested in visiting the Kennel Block and National
Arts Education Archive during the afternoon period
for a tour and an update on their future use. She
would like an indication of numbers to anticipate
demand. If you wish to take part, could you
possibly write back
as soon as possible?
I
will also be publishing further receipts for
deposits this next week or so. After all enquiries
nearly finishing before Christmas, we have just
recently had quite a few more. Places are still
left, and I will publish more names after deposits
have been gathered in. It is still difficult to
give a final number, but at the moment, we have 52
people paid deposits.
Please keep on passing the word around, particularly
to those more recent years that are not
represented. The only way we can sustain reunions
on anything of a larger scale is to get more a
demographic spread of ages.
Best wishes!
Alan

22nd December 09
Dear Bretton Mail Group member.
Sorry to give you more mail, but a few of things
have cropped up.
Firstly, I have found another batch of mail that has
been sitting in the local post office. Amongst
which, are more cheques.
I
therefore receipt cheques for Liz Tunnard, Brenda
Dickinson, Dianne Wordley and Kath Richardson.
Secondly, I realize that because I have given
married names for female participants, it is not
possible to identify who they are. I will
therefore, put a list of confirmed attendees with
their maiden names where appropriate, on the website
in the next couple of days
Finally, in response to a few letters that have now
come in, I wish to comment on their content.
Basically, because the list of participants so far
is somewhat limited to people from the 1960’s and
early 1970’s, it has put off quite a few people from
attending. This is of course, is completely
understandable, but one of the objectives of this
sort of ‘open’ reunion, is to encourage all year
groups to attend, and subsequently form their own
groups if numbers warranted it. Equally, if only a
few people from any particular group wished to meet,
then the ‘open reunion’ is a vehicle to facilitate
this. I genuinely believe that someone with
memories from the early sixties would have real
interest in talking to someone from the late
seventies, and find so much in common. I’m hoping
that the buffet and informal seating will encourage
people to mix freely. If we identify anyone by
themselves, we will invite them to join in. We are
a pretty gregarious bunch of characters, and I am
SURE that know one will be alone. I am taking it
upon myself to make sure that this doesn’t happen.
For those hanging back on attending, my final
comment is ‘give it a chance, and get others of your
age group to attend’
Alan
21st December 09
Dear Bretton Mail Group member.
I
have now returned from holiday and am processing
deposits.
Previously received deposits from:
John Tudor, Richard and Ann Flowerday, Duncan Oxley,
Ric Jerome, Dave & Jean Edwards, Sandra Green +1,
Richard Keys, Graham and Jean Hunt, Alyn Davies +1,
Moira Long. Dianne Butterfield.
Now further received deposits from:
John Wood, Roger and Judith Hutchinson, John and
Dawn Stones, Maxine Marsh, Janet Daniels, Jem Barnes
+ 1, Martin Snow + 1 Michael Brook.
If
you have sent a deposit and can’t find your name on
this list, then please let me know a.s.a.p. Still
looks like we have a little way to go in poking folk
for deposits! So here is another sharp poke from
yours truly!
Once again please pass the word around. We are
getting there!
Finally, a few people have offered to perform in one
way or another. Is anyone out there prepared to
co-ordinate and put the performance together? This
would help both my work load and also the quality of
the evening.
Have a good Christmas and New Year everyone, and I
will put another update together in early January.
Alan
13th November 09
Dear mail group members,
Firstly, a quick report, and a list of those from
whom I have received a deposit. I hope that this
can act as a receipt to save mail outs.
Despite a large number of people indicating a wish
to attend the 2010 reunion I have only had a handful
of deposits.
The following are now confirmed as attendees,
John Tudor, Richard and Ann Flowerday, Duncan Oxley,
Ric Jerome, Dave & Jean Edwards, Sandra Green +1,
Richard Keys, Graham and Jean Hunt, Alyn Davies +1,
Moira Long. Dianne Butterfield.
I
have had over 70 letters of intent to attend, so I
would ask once again for those who REALLY wish to
attend to confirm with a deposit. There are only
places for 100 and it is now likely that some who
have said they are coming, but not sent a deposit
will be disappointed if they leave it too long. We
are allowing partners and escorts to attend, as well
as Bretton ex members.
On
a more positive note, the letters have been coming
in thick and fast, with a lot of history and
memories. I apologies for not being able to answer
them all properly, but time is not on my side. I am
away at the end of next week to Australia and New
Zealand, and was hoping to confirm numbers be next
week. Please! If you are coming, send you deposit.
I
will be putting more information on the website
soon, so keep having a look. Thanks to Moira Long &
Dianne Butterfield for the ‘Snailmail’ letters that
they have sent out manually. A number of staff have
now been tracked down and contacted. Some have
verbally confirmed their attendance. If deposits
are received then I will publish a receipt.

Regards to all!

30th October 09
Dear All,
Things are moving along quite nicely now for the
2010 reunion at the Sculpture Park, with offers of
entertainment and help now coming in. Both Richard
Keys (and possibly Ric Jerome) from the 68-71 period
and John Clark from the 73-76 period have offered to
do a spot. Others have shown interest but not
confirmed. Prof. Alun Davies and wife have also
confirmed their attendance. It is now time for me
to ‘firm up’ and publish attendees. To achieve
this, I need to ask for a £10 deposit to help me pay
for the fees already paid, and a final show of
commitment. The balance of the deposits and meal
costs will be collected on the day of the reunion by
Moira Long and Dianne Butterfield. I also want to
publish a list of ideas and a plan for the evening;
however, this will depend a little on numbers and
also people wishing to contribute. We could still
do with a few more attendees from other year groups
to help us to develop future reunions and give the
representation a bit more depth.
So, Keep networking and passing the word around!
And, gi us yer cash to show you are coming and help
me with the finances.
My
address is below to send deposits.
I
am away for a week and back on the 7th
November, if you wish to call me
tobermory@mull.com
28th Aug 09
Dear Bretton mail group member,
Thanks for all the responses, and
help from Sue Gidman (Batchelor) and
the Flowerdays.
I have now taken the plunge and
booked the Sculpture Park Restaurant
for the evening of Saturday the 15th
May 2010
The Sculpture Park venue was clearly
a popular favourite by almost
everyone, and it certainly is a
magnificent place to hold the event,
with views over the Deer Park and a
good reputation for food.
The projected cost will be about £35
(excluding drinks) which will
include a good buffet meal and the
hire of the venue.
I have personally paid the deposit,
and will have to pay a deposit for
meals later, so I will be asking for
a deposit to cover each attendee
sometime in the next two months.
At this stage I would like to have a
rough idea of numbers, and also ask
for a little help? Please could you
indicate your attendance and
secondly,
get
the word around. I
would like the event to be open to
all, even though it is likely to be
dominated by years between 1966 and
1973. Also, I would like to request
help with entertainment? Could
anyone do an acoustic number or two,
or even a limited electric version?
I intend inviting a few ex staff
this time, now that I have a few
more contact details. If you are
personally still in contact with any
of the old sods, then please let me
know?
There is a maximum number of 100 for
this venue.
Details of menus and the venue
itself will be placed on the website
http://www.bretton-hall.com/future-reunions.htm
this weekend.
More information will be circulated
to those who indicate an
attendance. Also, information will
be placed on the website.
Activities for the Saturday
afternoon are also in the planning
stage
The secret to the success of this
event is networking. If all those
who attended last year bring two
others, we have an event,
Regards, to all, and spread the
word!
