PETE and SUE ( nee Brown) CASTLE
1965-68
We met in our first term at Bretton—we
had to, we were doing the same course (art), were in
all the same tutor groups and were even teaching
practice partners! By Christmas we were engaged and
caused a bit of a stir by getting married at the end
of our second year. For that we had to get special
permission from the Principal. He said we had been
“quite faithful” so he let us.
We’ve continued to be ‘quite
faithful’ and are celebrating 40 years of marriage
this summer (2007).
After college we both taught for a
short time in Lincolnshire where our daughter, Lucy,
was born and then moved to Nottingham where we
adopted Christie. We then spent 12 years in Luton
where I (Pete) gave up teaching to go on the road as
a professional folk singer/storyteller and Sue
started teaching again.
In 1987 we moved to Derby and a
couple of years ago we moved up the road to Belper
where we live now.
Sue had to stop teaching and took
early retirement through ill health in 1995. Since
then she’s been doing a lot of artistic things,
particularly poetry. I’m still on the road playing
at all kinds of venues including doing a lot of work
in schools. (see my web site for details:
www.petecastle.co.uk ) This summer I’m off to
Washington DC to take part in the Smithsonian
Folklife Festival which should be exciting.
