Sandra Green (nee Wicks)
at Bretton 1968 to 1971 Maths
I revisited the campus on Thursday and it was
like rolling back the years. I even managed to get
a look in Mansion before it locked its doors next
week. I remember listening to music recitals in one
of the front rooms in Mansion and having some
lectures in the room next to the common room.
I had a room in Grasshopper and I was amazed to see
that the interior of these hostel rooms hadn't
really changed.
I studied maths and my special friend at college was
Sheila Staton who also studied maths. She came from
Doncaster and I was invited to her home some
week-ends. I also remember an art student, Betty,
who produced a sculpture similar to a dandelion seed
head. We were on final teaching practise together.
I am now married with a son and a daughter and our
home is in the heart of rural Essex.
When the family was young we shared a common interst
in music so we joined a brass band where I played
horn. I even took my grade 5 exam at the grand old
age of 50.
I taught for eleven years at a primary school near
Chelmsford before having children. I then helped in
a play-school. I eventually returned to teaching
when my children were old enough and worked in a
part-time capacity for four years. Then I had a
variety of jobs in the retail sector.
The family have grown up now - my son gained a first
class honours degree in electronic engineering and
my daughter has just gained her degree at Oxford
University studying philosophy, politics and
economics.
I have now taken early retirement after undergoing
treatment for cancer (the doctors are pleased with
my progress - it has now been 3 years and all my
check-ups have

been good).
I am very active in the garden and enjoy tai chi. I
am becoming a good detective with family history.
I would love to meet up with old students so I hope
your next reunion is a success.
I have more photos of Bretton Hall 1968-1971 and
will send them separately. Also some of my family
in the band.
